Self Portrait _ The Beginning of the Year 85x60

Brid Higgins ni Chinneide
Bríd studied painting and drawing in the Repin Academy of Fine Arts, St Petersburg, Russia. She has taken part in several group exhibitions including "By Diverse Means…" with Pallas Studios at the Chq Building, and was most recently selected for the Derek Hill Gallery open submissions, at which she won a prize for special merit. She has work showing at the Dalkey Arts Gallery and also works on private commissions.

"Observation is central to my work as a painter. I work both from life and from memory and my paintings are representational. I represent the contours and shades of the physical world and also try to render the more tenuous idea of atmosphere in terms of colour, light and the varying attitudes and expressions of people. It is my aim to convey an idea as well as an image in my paintings and often that idea is a narrative. The people and objects in my paintings have a past and a future and a context. I am always interested in interpreting people's relationship with their surroundings and in the case of portraiture, their surroundings include me, the artist."
